Project 2: Contextual Fit

Addition to an Existing Order

Project statement
The project, commissioned by the Smith Family, is to design an addition to this famous house originally designed by Richard Meier in 1965. The Smiths instructed that the original design's integrity must be respected, but the addition must have its own presence.

Narrative
The Smith Family is interested in art, math, and science. They enjoy things having order and beauty, which is why they like the golden ratio. They would like a new master suite and family room both with views of the water. The family room must be large enough to accommodate gatherings with extended family, yet maintain an intimate feeling. It is important to Mr. Smith that there is a private room for meditation and exercise with good natural lighting, with access to the outside yard. There should also be an office adjacent to the family room for general use of the entire family.
