ARC486-Architectural Design V
This architectural design course integrates several architectural and engineering design philosophies and methodologies into a comprehensive studio project. This course introduces very little new material; rather it is to synthesize knowledge learned in the following areas of design and analysis: architectural, structure, construction, site, energy (mechanical/electrical) and building systems and cost estimating. This multidisciplinary project normally uses a student design team approach, but our section featured solo design approach for a majority of the post-programming phase. This course includes a required practicum designed to provide extra time for the studio experience.

ARC 486 Summer 2023 Project: Two Garner Lane, Bay Shore
The objective of this project is to design an innovative site-specific project with a green roof and three other sustainable features for a 4.8-acre site in Bay Shore, NY. The site is zoned BUS 1 and has access to Montauk Highway and a lake. The students can choose from a variety of building program types, such as a car showroom, a museum, a school, a library, etc. Each project must also include a 2,500 sf café open to the public.
The project consists of several stages, starting from site analysis, program development, and basic code review to precedent presentation, schematic design, design development, and construction drawings. Each stage has specific requirements and deliverables that are graded according to the rubric provided in the project outline. The final submission is multiple sets of drawings (Site, Presentation, and Construction) that includes site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, and details.
The project aims to demonstrate the students’ ability to apply the principles of sustainable design, site planning, building codes, construction methods, and graphic communication in a comprehensive design project. The project also encourages the students to explore their creativity and innovation in designing a site-specific project that responds to the context and the client’s needs.
